Yom Kippur is considered to be the holiest day for the Jewish people – it is a day that is able to atone for all the sins of man. On afternoon service of this day we read the book of Jonah, the reason being – to teach us that no one is beyond the reach of G‑d and that even after G-d decided that the people of Nineveh should be destroyed because of their evil doings – G-d listened to their true full hearted repentant and turned around his decision
